Today, Thursday, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faik Zidan, called for addressing the shortcomings and updating some constitutional texts, on the occasion of the twenty-first anniversary of the referendum on the permanent Iraqi constitution.
Zidan said in a statement received by the News Video Agency that adherence to the constitution and respect for it necessitate the updating of some of its texts after more than two decades since its drafting under delicate transitional circumstances, recalling with honor the sacrifices that paved the way for its approval and appreciating the role of the high religious authority, the Iraqi people, and the international community.
He added that the experience has revealed issues in application and interpretation that contributed to the disruption of constitutional entitlements, most notably those related to parliamentary majorities, the election of the President of the Republic, determining the largest parliamentary bloc, and other contentious provisions.
He continued that the Parliament today faces a national and historical responsibility to review these provisions and make the necessary amendments according to the mechanisms established by the constitution and in accordance with the law and the will of the people.
He clarified that what is needed is to update legislation to keep pace with the requirements of the state and the development of its democratic experience, enhance the sovereignty of the state and the rule of law, strengthen its institutions, and safeguard community rights and individual freedoms under the pluralistic democratic system.
