The Meteorological Authority warned today, Saturday, of heavy thunderstorms in several areas of the country during the night.
The authority stated in a statement received by the "Video News Agency" that "current monitoring of thunderstorm activity shows continued effects on various areas of the country due to a state of atmospheric instability, with varying thunderstorm cell activity and movement direction."
The statement added that "in the capital Baghdad and Salah al-Din, there are thunderstorm clouds over parts of the capital Baghdad and areas of Salah al-Din, moving towards the east, with continued chances of varying intensity rain showers within the path of these formations."
The statement continued that "thunderstorm clouds in the southern part of the country continue to affect regions of the south, with activity currently concentrated in parts of Basra, Maysan, and southeastern Dhi Qar, with chances of rain accompanied by lightning and thunder, and the intensity of the rainfall may vary spatially depending on the severity of the thunderstorm activity."
It was noted that "thunderstorm cells are forming west of Al-Muthanna, moving towards the southeast, which makes some areas within its path likely to be affected by rainfall in the coming hours."
The statement continued that "the forecasts for tonight indicate continued chances of rain in the cities of the central and southern regions, with expectations for the formation of areas of heavy rainfall in some cities of the center, accompanied by lightning and thunder and downdraft winds from the thunderstorm clouds," explaining that "caution is required, especially in areas experiencing thunderstorm activity and heavy rainfall in short periods."
The statement concluded that "these conditions are characterized by their local nature, as thunderstorm cells may rapidly develop in terms of intensity and spread, and rain amounts may vary significantly from one area to another, even within the same governorate."
