The Italian Ministry of Defense announced today, Tuesday, the complete withdrawal of all Italian troops from Iraq as part of the reorganization of its military presence outside the country.

Rome had withdrawn most of its personnel from Iraq by March 2026, following a nighttime airstrike that targeted a military base in the Kurdistan region.

Italian forces participated in Operation "Inherent Resolve," led by the United States against the ISIS terrorist organization, and in the NATO mission in Iraq, which is a non-combat advisory mission aimed at building capacities.

Italian forces and NATO forces agreed with the Iraqi authorities to leave the area by September 30.
