Specialists in China conducted the first orthodontic procedure on a panda using techniques borrowed from human orthodontics.

A male giant panda named "Bixia," born in 2022, suffered a jaw injury shortly after birth. Experts feared that the panda would have difficulty chewing bamboo, posing a serious risk to its life.

Chinese specialists successfully corrected the misalignment of the lower jaw of the giant panda using orthodontic techniques borrowed from human treatments.

This is the first procedure of its kind performed on this rare species of animal, with the treatment carried out by specialists from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the West China Hospital of Stomatology.
