Dutch authorities have announced tightened security measures in several major cities in anticipation of potential riots and violence during Halloween celebrations, following the spread of inciting calls online urging youth to gather, create chaos, and target commercial properties.
In the city of Maastricht, security concerns have increased after calls for gathering in "Vrijthof" square were detected, alongside threats targeting the "de Bijenkorf" store, coinciding with the Limburg derby match, which is expected to attract large crowds.
The calls have also spread to the capital, Amsterdam, with demands circulating to gather in Dam Square and target the surrounding commercial centers, while shops and businesses in The Hague have begun to take precautionary measures, including covering their glass facades with wooden boards in anticipation of vandalism.
These developments come amid fears of a recurrence of the violence and riots that occurred in France and Belgium in recent weeks.
For his part, Dutch Interior Minister Peter Hermans acknowledged the existence of worrying indicators in several cities, emphasizing the government's respect for the right to peaceful assembly and expression, while stressing the need for legal action against those involved in vandalism and chaos.
Security agencies continue their preparations for Halloween celebrations in an effort to prevent any potential disturbances and maintain public safety and the well-being of citizens.
