The river police in Nineveh province warned today, Wednesday, against approaching or being in the flow of the Tigris River, following an increase in water releases from the Mosul Dam based on the instructions of the Ministry of Water Resources.
A security source told "Video News Agency" in a press interview that "the discharge from the Mosul Dam was raised this morning from 700 to 800 cubic meters per second, according to the directives of the National Center for Water Resources Management," urging citizens, especially those swimming during the summer, to "exercise extreme caution and stay away from the river flow to avoid drowning incidents resulting from rising water levels and fast currents."
These warnings come hours after videos circulated showing the flow and leakage of water from the Mosul Dam lake toward several villages in the Wa’na district in the northern province, causing the streets of the villages (Mahwir Al-Janoobi, Mahwir Al-Shamali, and Ammar Bayt) to flood and water to enter some homes.
Residents of the affected villages confirmed that they had made numerous appeals and demands to the relevant authorities to intervene and curb this crisis to limit the losses, but no treatments or radical solutions have been proposed so far.
The Wa’na district is the first area adjacent to the Mosul Dam from the water flow side, making it the most affected by any increase in water storage or discharge from the dam, as these flows directly impact the villages located there.
