Arrests of Iraqis in Germany on charges of fighting with "ISIS"

German authorities arrested two Iraqi citizens today, Thursday, on suspicion of involvement in terrorist acts, following evidence suggesting they fought with ISIS in Iraq almost a decade ago.

The spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office in Düsseldorf stated, in response to an inquiry, that the office accuses the two men, aged 29 and 46, of being members of a terrorist organization abroad, according to the German news agency.

The detainees are said to have participated in battles fought by ISIS in Iraq since at least mid-2015 until the end of 2016.

The arrests were carried out in the towns of Höxter and Bottrop in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The spokesperson confirmed that arrest warrants had been issued in advance. As of the afternoon, no decision had been made regarding pre-trial detention.

She mentioned that the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) received a report and was able to track the suspects. Mobile phones and laptops were seized from the apartments of the detainees.

The spokesperson added that there are no indications of any planned attacks in Germany.
