Thousands of revelers covered the Spanish town of Buñol in red today, Wednesday, during the annual La Tomatina festival, after about 165 tons of ripe tomatoes were used. Trucks loaded with tomatoes made their way through the crowds, while participants threw tomatoes at each other for more than an hour, turning their white shirts quickly into shades of pink and red.

The festival takes place on the last Wednesday of August and has its roots in a food fight that occurred in 1945. This year, more than 20,000 people were expected to participate, with tourists from outside Spain making up about 40% of the participants over the past three years.

Visitors from outside the region pay 15 euros to enter, and the only rule is to crush the tomatoes before throwing them to avoid injuries. After the final cannon shot, revelers head to communal showers, and then the town's streets are washed down with water hoses.
