Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi chaired today, Monday, the first regular session of the Supreme National Water Committee for the year 2026, with the presence of several ministers, advisors, and executive officials.

The media office of the Prime Minister stated in a statement received by the News Video Agency that the session reviewed the water situation in reservoirs and dams, the measures taken to absorb rainwater and floods, and the best ways to manage water storage according to national needs, where several necessary decisions were made.

It added that the decisions included taking legal measures against the sources causing pollution in the Diyala River, including a comprehensive examination and assessment project for dams in the investment plan of the Ministry of Water Resources and securing its funding as a top priority, as well as exempting daily wage workers at the Mosul Dam and converting them to contracts under the permanent treatment project for the dam’s foundations.

He continued that the committee decided to form a central committee chaired by the Ministry of Water Resources to streamline the procedures related to conflicts between water harvesting dam projects and other ministries' projects, in addition to approving the recommendations of the regional initiative to protect the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, with the committee overseeing it, simplifying the mechanisms for including its projects in the investment budget, and obligating the parties responsible for pollution to install treatment plants and assigning the Ministry of Environment to monitor them and take legal actions against violations.
