The government of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled its new budget under the slogan "Masters of Our Fate," in a bid to reduce Canada's economic reliance on the United States, enhance economic independence, and diversify trade partnerships amid trade tensions and U.S. tariffs.
Carney asserted that economic relations between Ottawa and Washington will not return to what they were before the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, emphasizing the need to reshape the Canadian economic growth model to strengthen the country's ability to face external fluctuations.
For his part, Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the budget focuses on boosting trade between Canadian provinces and expanding trade relations with global markets, indicating that the country aims to build a stronger and more independent economy, away from political and economic developments in the United States.
The budget includes measures to support workers and sectors affected by U.S. tariffs, particularly the automotive and steel industries, which have suffered losses due to trade restrictions on Canadian exports.
In this context, Canadian Trade Minister tasked with relations with the United States, Dominic LeBlanc, confirmed that negotiations regarding tariffs will continue with the White House, despite political changes within the United States, noting that diversifying trade partnerships will remain a priority for the Canadian government.
These moves come at a time when Canada faces economic challenges related to trade tensions and rising energy costs, after the Bank of Canada raised interest rates last month for the first time in three years in an effort to curb inflationary pressures.
The new budget reflects a Canadian trend towards reducing dependence on the U.S. market and enhancing the national economy's resilience in the face of global trade and political transformations.
