The Green Iraq Observatory, concerned with environmental issues, stated today, Thursday (September 24, 2026), that addressing the pollution issue in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers requires many years and giant strategic projects, pointing out that the current pollution leads to 13 serious diseases in humans.
Environmental statements and reports indicated that the observatory's claim that expectations for a quick and effective solution to the pollution problem are completely incorrect, confirming that the anticipated recommendations from the parliamentary committee responsible for monitoring pollution will not bring anything new, as they will be limited to threats and legal actions without providing realistic solutions and alternatives for the entities, factories, and power plants that dump their waste and heavy water into the river channels.
According to the observatory, pollutants will continue to worsen in the upcoming phase due to decreasing water levels and increasing population and service pressure on Baghdad's municipality, municipalities, and hospitals, not to mention the direct health risks represented by gastrointestinal disorders and urinary tract infections, leading to the most serious condition such as "uremic hemolytic syndrome," which results in acute kidney failure and the destruction of blood cells.
