Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein met today, Friday, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the General Assembly held in New York.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement received by the News Video Agency that Minister Hussein conveyed the greetings, thanks, and appreciation of the Prime Minister to the UN Secretary-General on the occasion of the nearing end of his duties, praising his efforts during his tenure and the support he provided to Iraq and the cooperation between the two sides.
He added that Iraq values the role played by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) since 2003 and what it contributed to supporting institutions during various phases, emphasizing the importance of continuing cooperation with the international organization in the upcoming stage, which will witness the election of a new Secretary-General next year.
The statement continued that the Foreign Minister recorded a message in the Secretary-General's guestbook expressing his thanks and appreciation to Guterres for what he has provided to Iraq and his efforts in preserving international peace and security.
For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his great pride in Iraq, its people, and its civilization, thanking the Iraqi government and people for their support of his work, and extending his wishes for further progress and prosperity for Iraq.
