U.S. President Donald Trump announced today, Sunday, that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire in the energy sector.
Trump stated in a post on the "Truth Social" platform, followed by the Video News Agency, that "as of this moment, a ceasefire in the energy sector of the war between Russia and Ukraine has come into effect. Both parties have agreed to this. Do not violate this agreement."
The announcement comes after Trump confirmed last Friday that an agreement had been reached with Moscow to suspend sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7.
In return, the Russian government allowed the sale of 500,000 tons of diesel to foreign markets starting yesterday, Saturday, after banning its export in July in response to Ukrainian strikes.
Trump had criticized, yesterday Saturday, Volodymyr Zelensky for continuing to allow strikes on Russian refineries, urging him to stop, and asserting that Ukraine should choose a new leader capable of reaching an agreement.
For his part, Zelensky wrote on Sunday that his country would be ready to cease attacks on Russian refineries if Russia halted its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
He emphasized that any steps to de-escalate must be mutual and backed by real guarantees.
