A government source revealed today, Sunday, that legal approvals have been obtained to open a new mass grave in the Karzk area of the Sinjar district in Nineveh Governorate, while indicating that there are dozens of other graves awaiting judicial approvals to begin the process of opening them.
The source stated in a conversation followed by the news agency that "the concerned parties have obtained the necessary legal approvals to open a new mass grave in the Karzk area of the Sinjar district, after it was discovered in the past period".
He added that "the grave represents one of dozens of mass graves that are still awaiting official approvals, amid estimates that it contains the remains of thousands of victims, including women, children, and the elderly who were executed by terrorist organizations during their control of areas in Nineveh Governorate, especially the Sinjar district".
The source noted that the past years have seen the opening of several mass graves and the transfer of the remains of hundreds of victims to the forensic medicine department to conduct DNA tests, with the aim of identifying them and returning their remains to their families.
He indicated that the new grave is expected to include the remains of other victims, whose families are still waiting to know their fate and reveal their identities, after suffering that lasted for about 12 years.
