The public relations department of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps announced today, Sunday, that fires have broken out in three oil tankers while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, noting that an explosion occurred in the third tanker.
The department mentioned in a statement received by the Vido news agency that the three tankers were subjected to explosion and burning since the early hours of the morning, leading to thick columns of smoke rising in the sky over the strait.
The statement added that the burning of the tankers was due to the malfunction of navigation and identification systems, as well as what it described as "American smuggling operations," accusing the ships of violating Iranian regulations governing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Revolutionary Guard confirmed that Iran had previously informed the vessels of the regulations and instructions regarding passage, warning that ships that violate those instructions and take unauthorized routes will face consequences.
The statement did not specify the names or nationalities of the tankers, nor did it mention the extent of the damages or whether there were injuries among their crews.
These developments come amid rising military and security tensions in the region, and ongoing disputes over maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
