Financial data issued by the Central Bank of Iraq showed that the size of Iraq's public internal debt rose to 106.072 trillion dinars by the end of June 2026, compared to 103.179 trillion dinars at the end of May, an increase of 2.893 trillion dinars within one month.
According to the data, which was reviewed by the Video News Agency, the internal debt increased from 90.515 trillion dinars at the end of 2025 to 106.072 trillion dinars by the end of June 2026, an increase of 15.557 trillion dinars during the first six months of the year.
The internal debt is distributed across total claims of the Ministry of Finance in favor of the Central Bank, which rose to 67.499 trillion dinars by the end of June, compared to 63.199 trillion dinars at the end of May, while treasury transfers amounted to 8.742 trillion dinars, and loans totaled 18.964 trillion dinars, while bonds recorded 10.867 trillion dinars.
The rise in internal debt comes in tandem with the recording of public expenditures amounting to 46.697 trillion dinars by the end of May, against public revenues of 33.747 trillion dinars, reflecting the ongoing gap between revenues and expenditures, a gap that drives the government to rely on debt instruments to finance its financial needs.
