Water Resources Minister, Muthana al-Tamimi, discussed today, Monday, with the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Bejgard Talabani, ways to enhance cooperation and joint coordination in the field of water resource management.
The Ministry of Water Resources stated in a statement, which the News Video Agency received a copy of, that al-Tamimi welcomed Talabani and her accompanying delegation at the ministry's headquarters in Baghdad. The meeting addressed mechanisms for developing cooperation between the federal government and the regional government to enhance water security and support national interests.
Al-Tamimi emphasized the importance of continuing communication and coordination between the two sides by holding regular meetings at both the ministerial and technical levels, considering the significance and sensitivity of the water file. He stressed the necessity of exchanging data and information related to water resources to improve water management, regulate discharges, and ensure their distribution from the north of the country to the south.
The two sides also discussed the working paper presented by the regional minister, which included proposals for dam maintenance and the implementation of several projects included in the strategic study of water and land resources that the federal Ministry of Water Resources is updating to align with the changes and challenges facing the water sector.
The meeting also included discussions on implementing water harvesting projects, in addition to enhancing staff participation in specialized training courses and programs.
For her part, Talabani confirmed the depth of relations and cooperation between the two sides, and the Kurdistan Regional Government's commitment to continuing joint work based on scientific foundations that contribute to finding appropriate solutions to common water challenges and issues, both internally and externally.
She emphasized the importance of working as a unified team, stemming from a shared goal and collective responsibility in securing water resources, protecting, maintaining, and implementing projects that serve the interests of all Iraqis.
