The Supreme Judicial Council confirmed today, Wednesday, that the protection of freedoms and constitutional rights and ensuring their exercise represent the essence of a democratic state and a fundamental pillar of the rule of law.
In a statement received by the Video News Agency on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, the council stated that the judiciary serves as a guarantee to preserve and protect rights and freedoms, emphasizing the importance of entrenching constitutional principles in building a democratic state.
It pointed out that the freedom of opinion and expression, as well as respect for diversity and pluralism, are rights guaranteed by the Iraqi constitution, to be exercised in a manner that preserves the rights and dignity of others, without violating or insulting the components, religions, sects, and beliefs.
The Supreme Judicial Council stressed that respecting these rights contributes to entrenching freedom, justice, and the rule of law, and enhancing social peace.
