The Federal Biomedical Agency in Russia announced that the country's scientists are working on developing a test to detect sarcopenia, which is associated with loss of muscle mass as people age.
The agency stated: "Our Brain Research Center and Neurotechnologies is working on a project aimed at studying the mechanisms of age-related muscle mass loss. Identifying predictive indicators of muscle change dynamics will form the basis for developing diagnostic tests capable of predicting sarcopenia and its various causes."
The statement added: "Russian scientists are scheduled to complete the development of a prototype test for detecting sarcopenia by 2028. Patient groups have been formed, and data analysis is currently underway to identify stable RNA (ribonucleic acid) indicators, which will form the basis of new testing systems."
The agency also revealed that by 2027, a molecular atlas of the functional activity of genomic regulatory elements in human muscle tissue will be created as part of the project, which will include data on the dynamics of muscle aging and various forms of sarcopenia.
Sarcopenia manifests in some individuals with aging due to the decline in muscle mass, affecting walking ability, balance, and performance of daily activities, and may lead to loss of physical strength and feelings of fatigue.
Health experts indicate that sarcopenia may be associated with several factors, including lack of physical activity, insufficient sleep, following a diet lacking in protein, vitamins, and essential nutrients, as well as hormonal imbalances related to aging.
