The measure fell short by a single vote, with 49 in favor and 50 against, while the voting largely fell along party lines, as most Republicans opposed the bill, while Democrats backed it almost unanimously.
The agency revealed on Thursday that U.S. and Iranian negotiators in New York are exploring a gradual path to end the war, involving the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran and Washington lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Iran.
Trump stated during his speech at the United Nations on Wednesday that he had two options: either to "destroy" Iran or reach an agreement, expecting to find a diplomatic solution after the upcoming U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November.
